General Information on Ball Screws

A ball screw is a clever tool which is used to change turning motions into straight line movements. This happens without much friction, energy loss through frictional effects is kept to a minimum. A further effect of this is that the ball screw apparatus wears at a slower rate. A ball screw is usually larger than a leadscrew, because it has parts in the interior of the ball screw nut. Within the casing of a ball screw nut a series of metal balls which roll through the threaded interior of the barrel.
It is very important that it is impossible for particles of dirt to get into the interior of the ball screw. The metal balls inside the mechanism need complete freedom of motion along the shaft and any tiny speck of dust can affect their smooth motion. Ball screws are known to be long lasting, and known to be very accurate. However these advantages can be affected in the case of dirt particles in the ball screw nut. For this reason the makers of these ball screws are careful to use bellows and other methods so as to make certain that no miniature obstructions becoming fixed within the mechanism.
Ball screws can be very accurate due to the method through which they are manufactured. That is why they are used in areas that depend on almost perfect precision, like missile deployment apparatus and aircraft mechanisms. Another common use of ball screws is in steppers, which are used to make semiconductors.
Many ball screws may be driven backwards. That is to say instead of inputting rotational motion and obtaining a linear movement as an output, the operator can instead input linear motion and obtain rotational motion. This can be achieved as a consequence of the low friction contained within the ball screw, which keeps the moving parts from seizing.

Sometime ball screws get worn, then we would have to go for ball screw repair services. There are many companies which provide this service but this is a temporary repair which lasts for few months only.
